MEMPHIS, TN - Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity is pleased to announce Sergio Ceja (Nebraska-Kearney, Iota Gamma ’12) as the May 2016 Pike of the Month. Pike of the Month award recipients demonstrate the True Pike ideals, working to improve themselves and have a positive impact on their chapters, campuses, and communities.

Ceja, a senior at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, was nominated by his chapter advisor, Josh Schuman (Nebraska-Kearney, Iota Gamma ’09) for his character, his integrity, and his leadership skills.

Since joining Iota Gamma Chapter, Ceja has successfully balanced fraternity life with academics, volunteer work, and campus leadership positions. Within the chapter, Ceja served as recruitment chairman, social chairman, public relations chairman, and social media chairman.

Through his leadership, the chapter established a retention team and saw a 32 percent increase in initiations and a 23 percent increase in member retention. Ceja also placed an increased emphasis on recruiting members who exemplify the True Pike ideals, focusing on quality men instead of quantity.

Additionally, he organized the chapter’s first sorority appreciation week during which men helped clean sorority houses, washed members’ cars, and baked cupcakes.

He is PIKE University Garnet Certified, Homecoming King, Iota Gamma’s Gentleman of the Year for the past three years, and on the Dean’s List. He has maintained a 3.6 grade point average while majoring in elementary education.Outside of the classroom, Ceja was an in intern for UNK Athletics, heavily involved with student government, a student diplomat, and a new student enrollment leader.

Dusty Newton, Director of Undergraduate Recruitment & Admissions at UNK, described Ceja’s contribution to the UNK admissions team,“ Sergio is a natural born leader and has been very active on campus since his arrival. The team in our office was thrilled to hire him as a student diplomat to give campus tour to prospective students and their families. We were so impressed with him as a New Student Enrollment Leader, we hired him for a second summer, which rarely happens.”

When not busy with his campus involvement, Ceja volunteers his time with Arc of Buffalo County, an area food bank, and as a tutor at a local elementary school. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Ceja plans to become a teacher and a coach with aspirations of working as an athletic director or for a professional sports team.

At all times, he serves as an ideal representative of PIKE, improving the reputation and character of Iota Gamma at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

“Serg is the most loyal, caring, and hard-working man I know,” said Iota Gamma Dream Girl Mallory Ritthaler. “He continually puts others before himself and never complains. I’m so thankful to have a friend as loyal as Sergio to count on so matter what.”

The Pike of the Month is selected from over 17,000 undergraduates and highlights members nominated by their brothers for living the ideals of the True Pike.
