Alberta Pikes Give Back to Local Firefighters

Alberta Pikes
MEMPHIS, TN - Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity is pleased to highlight Lambda Epsilon Chapter (Alberta) as the October 2019 Chapter Spotlight. Vice President of Philanthropy Colby Kalmakoff ’18 shares more about the chapter’s recent philanthropy event.

Lambda Epsilon Chapter hosted a Fireman’s Challenge Week to support the Edmonton Firefighter Burn Treatment Society and the Chimo Animal Assisted Wellness and Learning Society (CAAWLS).

Created in 2014, the Fireman’s Challenge Week has always been successful, but the chapter aspired to make this year even better. Motivated by their recent Smythe Award win, chapter members voted to create a new vice president of philanthropy role to focus on growing this specific event.

The weeklong activities included a dodgeball tournament and banner competition. During the movie night contest, teams created short films about firefighting that were judged by the experts in attendance. In partnership with CAAWLS, a puppy photo booth was also hosted on campus, raising $400 for the organization.

The largest event of the week is the Fireman’s Challenge, a relay race inspired by the firefighter physical exam. This year, the chapter added a semi-formal to conclude the week. Local firefighters spoke to attendees about their profession and the importance of giving back.

Fireman’s Challenge is special to each member of Lambda Epsilon Chapter. Brothers enjoy getting to build relationships with the firefighters and hear their stories of serving the community.

Lambda Epsilon Chapter raised $2,100 for the Edmonton Firefighter Burn Treatment Society. They are looking forward to growing the event even further next year.
