Ryan Shaw ’16 was an award-winning artist, entrepreneur, athlete, and brother. He pioneered his own business in high school; had a painting displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; volunteered to help children with disabilities in underprivileged countries; and still found time to be a friend. In May 2016, Shaw passed away shortly after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. His brothers of Kappa Delta Chapter were determined to keep his legacy alive.

To memorialize Shaw’s incredible life, the chapter worked with Shaw’s family and friends, as well as the university’s Greek community, to organize the first annual Ryan Shaw Memorial 5K. The event raises money for the Ryan Shaw Foundation, benefitting Mustard Seed Communities, The Haven Project, and the Ryan Shaw ’15 Entrepreneurial Program. Since its creation in 2017, over $132,000 has been raised in donations, scholarships, and registration fees. In 2018, the 5K saw over 900 registered participants and over $85,000 raised, making it the most successful philanthropy event organized by a Greek organization at their university.

Continuing their success in 2018, Kappa Delta Chapter won its first Smythe Award since 1996. As the only chapter without an affiliated university to do so, the chapter has learned the art of networking and community involvement to drive their recruitment efforts. Moving forward, the chapter is focusing on its recruitment and fundraising efforts to take home another Smythe Award in 2019. Most importantly, they are excited to host an even more successful Ryan Shaw Memorial 5K to continue telling the story of their brother’s exceptional life.
