Robert Adger Smythe
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Smythe attended the Citadel, graduating in 1890. He founded Lambda Chapter there and was elected Grand Secretary/ Treasurer of the Fraternity at the 1889 Hampden-Sydney Convention, from which he was absent. A year later, the office divided, and he became Grand Treasurer in 1890 and held the post until 1933. He founded the Shield & Diamond and served as editor from 1892 to 1910. He spent most of his business years in cotton brokerage in Atlanta.
