From Mobile, Alabama, Foster attended Southwestern Presbyterian University in Tennessee from 1887 to 1891 where he was a member of Theta Chapter. He was, for one term, the only Theta in school, and he saved the chapter. After graduation, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Divinity in 1894 and served Presbyterian churches across the South from 1894 to 1936. Hampden-Sydney College conferred the Doctorate of Divinity on him in 1906, and he was a professor at Columbia Theological Seminary in Georgia from 1936 to 1941. He married and had three daughters and one son, John Shaw Foster Jr. who eventually served Pi Kappa Alpha himself as Grand Secretary and Grand Chaplain.
