Legendary men’s basketball coach Lute Olson became an initiated member of The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity on Saturday evening, February 11, 2012. Olson, who was initiated through Gamma Delta Chapter at the University of Arizona, joins the ranks of over 250,000 members throughout the world.

Olson exemplifies all aspects of what Pi Kappa Alpha believes is The True Pike: a man committed to a life of caring for others as he cares for himself. Olson will be a role model for all Pi Kappa Alpha members and a true inspiration for success in all aspects of life.

Regarding leadership, Olson stated during his keynote, “Do something you have passion for and work harder at it than you ever have. Leadership is all about leading by example. Your devotion, dedication, and enthusiasm for your role is the key to leadership.”

In regards to The Fraternity, Olson acknowledged, “It is a nice feeling to be a part of this organization; I am looking forward to finding more ways to support Pi Kappa Alpha.”

Olson, born September 22, 1934 in Mayville, North Dakota is a graduate of Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prior to his 25-year tenure with the Arizona Wildcats, Olson coached the University of Iowa and Long Beach State basketball teams. His total coaching career spanned 50 years. Olson is regarded by many as one of the greatest coaches in the history of college basketball and holds 46 NCAA tournament wins, one behind John Wooden and one ahead of Bob Knight.

He brings tremendous passion and organization to a department that is continually recognized as a leader in the fraternal world. The expansion bar is set very high in Pi Kappa Alpha, and I am confident that Joe will exceed those expectations.” Joe served Alpha Phi Chapter on the recruitment committee, as vice president and as president. a thorough search and interviews, Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation Chief Executive Officer
Ryan Flickinger announced today the addition of two (2) new staff members. Both
Ginny N. Stalker and Dan M. Stockton have been hired to fill ‘Director of Development’
positions and will assume their duties on January 16th.

Ginny Stalker
brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the Greek industry. Most recently,
Ginny served as a four-year sales representative for OmegaFi, working closely
with scores of local fraternity and sorority chapters, house corporations and
alumni/ae associations. Prior to that, she served as associate director of
development for the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee; and worked on Pi
Kappa Alpha professional staff for six years upon graduating from the
University of Tennessee-Martin, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi.

Dan Stockton
(Lambda Iota, Central Oklahoma ’06) will be joining the Foundation staff after serving
the Fraternity as a professional staff member since June 2010. Dan worked as a
chapter consultant prior to being named director of expansion, where he
supervised the cultivation of existing Pike colonies and managed the process to
establish new groups. Stockton also served the Fraternity as an undergraduate
vice-president on the Supreme Council during his senior year of college.

“Ginny and Dan
bring strategic expertise and new energy to the Foundation at an important time
as we embark on a significant capital campaign supporting PIKE University,”
stated Flickinger. He added, “Ginny’s tenure and previous fundraising
experience will be evident immediately as she takes on the new role”.

Flickinger
worked closely with Fraternity Chief Executive Officer Justin Buck during the
process of identifying and selecting the new Foundation staff. When asked about
the outcome, Buck stated: “I couldn’t be happier for Pi Kappa Alpha. Ginny is a
Greek industry expert and a Pike insider. Dan has an excellent track record as
a previous vice president of the Supreme Council, chapter consultant and
director of expansion. I can think of no one better to go out and raise money
for a program (PIKE University) which is so critically important to our
organization.”

Apply now to lobby on behalf of Pike and the fraternity/sorority community in Washington, D.C.!

Pi Kappa Alpha, the North-American Interfraternity Conference and National Panhellenic Conference are looking for outstanding campus and chapter leaders to serve as advocates for the fraternity and sorority community in Washington, D.C. This is a great opportunity for Pikes or any students who are interested in combining their fraternity or sorority experience with their passion for politics. Each year, the NIC and NPC send student leaders to our nation’s capital to advocate for legislation that is important to the success of fraternity and sorority organizations across the country.

The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA) is a bill that would help make fraternity and sorority housing safer and more affordable for students. Alumni and students have been working together for several years to gather support for this bill by lobbying on behalf of the fraternity and sorority community. Student participation is a crucial part in gaining support from members of Congress who are eager to hear about students’ current experiences on campus and in fraternity and sorority housing.

This unique opportunity allows participants to experience Washington, D.C. in a new way through direct interaction in the legislative process. Many past participants have also found this to be a great opportunity for networking and gaining a greater perspective on the political process.

If selected, students will be expected to participate in prep work leading up to training sessions and Congressional visits in Washington, D.C., which will take place April 21-25, 2012.

To apply, please submit an application via the following link by December 23, 2011: https://nicindy.wufoo.com/forms/student-application-for-congressional-visits/

If you have any questions about this opportunity, please contact Jessica Pung at jpung@pattonboggs.com or by phone at 202-457-6302.

Pi Kappa Alpha Utilizing Career Networking Software via Facebook

Your career center’s job board directly on Facebook!

Easy and quick application form without leaving Facebook

View and apply to high quality postings targeted directly to your university

Let the jobs find you!

Receive automatic notifications of new job postings tailored to meet your preferences and employment history

Share and discuss jobs offers with your college peers

Data privacy

No commercial use of your data and no distribution to a third party

No information from your Facebook profile is sent to recruiters

Click here to access, post, and search jobs!

Searching for PIKE Athletes

The Shield & Diamond is soliciting the name(s) of Pikes who are participating in varsity athletics. HazingPrevention.org is a national organization dedicated to its mission of empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university student groups. They provide education, develop resources and build partnerships with others who believe in the work they do. The Fraternity believes that hazing prevention is everyone’s responsibility and that one should refuse to participate in any hazing activity as well as refuse to permit hazing to be inflicted upon them.

“Becoming a sponsor of HazingPrevention.org was an easy choice for our organization because it is already one of our main goals and priorities as a Fraternity. I am very pleased that Pi Kappa Alpha will continue to benefit from his service for the next several years."

2011 Distinguished Achievement Award

2011 Distinguished Achievement Award

G. Tuttle Distinguished Achievement Award is the highest recognition of achievement by Pi Kappa Alpha. Only one award is given each year. The DAA has been presented since 1936. The award is named in honor of Judge Elbert P. Tuttle of Atlanta. Judge Tuttle was a 1916 initiate of Beta Theta Chapter at Cornell and was one of the founders of that chapter. At the 1929 National Convention in Memphis, Tennessee he was elected Grand Princeps, the Fraternity’s highest office. He began to undertake a complete revision of Pi Kappa Alpha’s Constitution for submission to the next National Convention, which included key structural reforms in the Fraternity’s governing body. He served as national president from 1933-1938. With the outbreak of World War II, Tuttle left his law practice and enlisted in the Army. During action in the Pacific theater, he suffered multiple wounds in hand-to-hand action and was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, and the Legion of Merit, and ultimately rose to the rank of Brigadier-General. In 1954, President Eisenhower appointed him to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit – a time that was both challenging and tenuous in our nation’s history. For his extraordinary record of adherence to principle in the face of adversity, Judge Tuttle was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Carter in 1981 and the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award in 1989, and in 1990, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals building in Atlanta was renamed in his honor.

Pikes Make a Difference in Memphis, Tennessee at the 2011 Academy

Pi Kappa Alpha members from across North America attended the 2011 Academy in Memphis, Tennessee from July 28-31. Pi Kappa Alpha partnered with the MIFA Handyman Project to give a wheelchair-bound client “access to the world.” Despite hot temperatures and sporadic rain, on Thursday, July 29, PIKE students from Drexel University, Northwestern University, Louisiana Tech, California State-Fresno, Kennesaw State, and University of South Dakota visited the home of Frank Ward, Jr. to build a wheel chair ramp. MIFA Handyman Manager Mary Claire Borys welcomed the PIKE work team for a return visit for a Handyman Project. The students enjoyed speaking with the homeowner and working to improve his accessibility to the world, personal safety and happiness.

Pi Kappa Alpha is pleased to partner with outstanding organizations such as the MIFA Handyman Project and looks forward to future community service projects.

Thanks to the following Pikes for their participation in the 2011 Academy Community Service Project:

Robert Aulds (Gamma Psi, Louisiana Tech)

Dzenan Berberovic (Kappa Pi, South Dakota)

Michael Eberhard (Iota Beta, Cal State-Fresno)

Brendan Foley (Lambda Zeta, Drexel)

Christopher Gage (Lambda Zeta, Drexel)

Dan Kolbenschlag (Colony, Kennesaw State)

Richard Lazaro (Iota Beta, Cal State-Fresno)

Sean McDonnell (Lambda Zeta, Drexel)

John Mickles (Lambda Zeta, Drexel)

Konstantine Ouranitsas (Lambda Zeta, Drexel)

Patrick Schnettler (Gamma Rho, Northwestern)

Jordan Ward (Colony, Kennesaw State)

Justin S. Each monthly recipient of this highly selective award will be considered for the Undergraduate of the Year award.

Yager, a senior at Western Carolina University, is one of many to apply for this great recognition. Proudly deserving of this award, Yager has been a dedicated and motivated brother since his initiation in Zeta Xi Chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in 2008. Yager has served the chapter as president, vice president, recruitment chairman, scholarship chairman, member-at-large, and co-chairman of the Housing Corporation. Most notably, Yager implemented Zeta Xi’s first recruitment committee, which has recruited over 50 men since its inception, tripling the chapter size. Outside of the chapter Yager is a part of the Political Science Club, the History Club, and has worked on a campus state-budget committee which researched and will present its findings at the upcoming North Carolina State and Universities Budgets meeting. Outside of school, Yager participates in Habitat for Humanity, is a camp counselor, and a team member for a local ropes course. Graduating in August 2011 with a degree in political science and public affairs, Yager plans to move to Washington D.C. where he will be working with the United States House of Representatives. In addition, and to further his commitment for Pi Kappa Alpha, he plans on applying to become an operations advisor on an alumni advisory board.

NIC All-Fraternity All-American Baseball Team

The North-American Interfraternity Conference announced its selections for the 2011 All-Fraternity All-American Baseball Team. Through 143 years of perseverance, leadership, and an unwavering pursuit of greatness, the Fraternity that started its very first year with ten has now grown officially to 250,000.
The milestone number was reached on January 22, 2011 during the initiation of Epsilon Chapter’s pledge class. When Chapter President Carter Gradwell (Epsilon ’08) initiated Virginia Tech freshman Forrest Smith, he was officially the 250,000th man to be given the privilege of wearing the letters PKA across his chest.
With the 200,000th brother initiated in April 2000, the next 50,000 initiates have been gained in less time than any other group of 50,000 in the history of Pi Kappa Alpha. Going from the original six to 50,000 took 89 years; going from 200,000 to 250,000 took less than 11. Each 50,000 initiate mark has been achieved in less time than the one before; including 150,000 initiates in the last 35 years – an outstanding average of 4,286 men per year.
Today, in addition to 250,000 lifetime initiates, Pi Kappa Alpha boasts 230 chapter and colonies. The constant push for improvement is not lost on current Executive Vice President and CEO Justin Buck (Southeast Missouri State, Epsilon Iota ’96). “PIKE just concluded its best year ever,” Buck says. “It is an unprecedented time in its history due in large part to the emphasis the Fraternity and its chapters have placed on quality growth over the past 25 years. I am confident that PIKE will put in the work that is necessary to make the next 25 years even better, and set a new standard for excellence and growth.”
Buck recognizes that this way of thinking has trickled down to the chapter level as well, and is apparent in the story of 250,000th initiate Forrest Smith and Epsilon Chapter. Smith, originally from Fairfax, Virginia, brings the perspective of someone on the cusp of a lifetime of brotherhood. “When I found out I was the 250,000th initiate,” Smith says, “it really hit me how significant that was. I had to really think about everything I had just learned in pledging, and it made me realize how big this whole thing really is. It is truly an honor.”
Smith was the perfect choice in the eyes of Chapter President Gradwell. “Forrest was the unspoken leader of his pledge class; he was the heart. You can’t ask for a better pledge, friend, and brother. Looking at the future of our chapter, we couldn’t be happier to have him represent us and all of PIKE. We are excited for him and expect big things."
Also present to celebrate the 250,000th initiation was Virginia Tech Vice President of Alumni Relations and Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation President Thomas C. Tillar Jr. (Virginia Tech, Epsilon ’71). Tillar adds his perspective to the situation: “It is truly a milestone to know 250,000 men in our history have shared Pi Kappa Alpha. It is something every PIKE should be proud of. Our goal should always be to find as many men to share the Pi Kappa Alpha experience with. They’re out there and they deserve it. 250,000 is a very significant number in the Greek world, but only the beginning for Pi Kappa Alpha.”
As historic as a quarter of a million initiates is, PIKE won’t rest on its laurels. This is simply the next rung on the ladder; there are more milestones to reach, more men to initiate, and more progress to be made. Prominent PIKE Author Stephen R. Covey (Utah, Alpha Tau ’50) once said “There are three constants in life…change, choice and principles.” No matter how much times and situations have changed, the men of Pi Kappa Alpha have consistently made the right choices based on the underlying principles of the organization. Success is satisfying but satisfaction is fleeting. Pi Kappa Alpha is ready once again to take the next step and continue its never-ending pursuit of greatness. Here’s to the next quarter million!

Greek Housing On the Rise

Special note from Clint Bartman, Pi Kappa Alpha’s Senior Director of Real

(PCI) to publish the 2012 edition of its official alumni directory, the Pi Kappa Alpha Register.

Please know that this is an official partnership with a trusted vendor, PCI. Pi Kappa Alpha understands that you might not want to provide your information to just anyone, so please know that the request from PCI is being made on behalf of the Fraternity.

Mailing addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, employment information all need to be updated for the next official alumni directory. The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity is partnering with PCI to publish the directory and CD to document these changes and provide alumni an opportunity to stay better connected with fellow alumni.

Pi Kappa Alpha’s membership directory dates back to the infancy of the Fraternity. Membership records have been kept since the beginning of the Alpha Chapter, when the first official record of members was a hand written list that was produced as the Index in 1886. The first publication of this list was produced in 1916 and was called the Register. The preface of this book notes it was specifically designed to help chapters keep in touch with their alumni. Over the years, the list has seen breaks in publication and has assumed different names. The most recent publications occurred in 1981, ‘87, ’96, 2002, and ’06. With the 2012 edition of the directory, it will be returning to the roots of the first publication and officially assume the name The Pi Kappa Alpha Register.

When you receive your information from PCI on behalf of Pi Kappa Alpha, please answer the call and update your records!

Happy Founders Day!

On March 1st, 2011, Pi Kappa Alpha will celebrate 143 years as the best! Regardless of when and where you were initiated into Pi Kappa Alpha, March 1st is the day we all come together as brothers in the bonds of phi phi kappa alpha and celebrate the establishment of our great Fraternity.

At this special time of year, I encourage you to remember those who came before us and those who today embody what Pi Kappa Alpha means to you and me. I am amazed that the values we hold today, those which are outlined in the True Pike, were molded by men in their late teens and early twenties - more than a century ago.

Our Fraternity flourishes today on campuses large and small, public and private, in every corner of the continent because of the virtues at the core of Pi Kappa Alpha. These principles have been present for over 143 years and remain vibrant in the hearts of brothers across the generations and across our landscape.

Today, I hope you will pause and remember those who have come before us and shaped our great Fraternity - the founders and junior founders of Pi Kappa Alpha. I also hope you will pause and think of those who continue to embody what it is to be a True Pike. Together, the lives of those who came before us, the times we share together, and the principles to which we commit, are what we celebrate this Founders Day. For them - for you - we are truly grateful.

Happy Founders Day! I look forward to seeing you in Memphis at our upcoming Academy.

Prior to the start of the conference, Gamma Delta Community Service Chairman Steven Spithogiannis reported the men immediately went to work at the Giving Children Hope warehouse. Splitting into teams, one group organized and packaged medical supplies for doctors going abroad, while another larger group packed and organized backpacks of food to be given to underprivileged children to take home to their families. Employees of Giving Children Hope stressed how poverty is a much more prevalent problem than would be expected in the Orange County area, and is accentuated by the fact that there is almost no low-income housing available to those families.

Spithogiannis said, “The food relief tasks caused us to split into groups to make a kind of assembly-line/circuit around the warehouse as we packed the backpacks at amazing speed and created friendly contests such as "who can pack the most backpacks with food at once", making the work and time spent go much faster than any of us could have expected. Our group packaged a week's supply of food for the local schools. In just a few short hours, we put the charity ahead of schedule by packing and organizing hundreds of bags of food for the underprivileged families and supplies for the medical teams.”

Pi Kappa Alpha is pleased to partner with outstanding organizations such as Giving Children Hope and looks forward to future community service projects in conjunction with Pike University events.

November 19-21 in the effort to raise money to fund research to
help find a cure for Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). MPS is a disease that affects
the body’s natural ability to produce healthy enzymes which break down and
recycle cell materials. Individuals who are diagnosed with MPS have enzymes
that are insufficient or absent entirely. As a result, the cells
cannot perform properly and may lead to progressive damage throughout the
body. On average, a child diagnosed with MPS does not live long enough to
graduate college.

The Chapter will cycle over 400 miles

blanketing the country, and diligently working to produce the newest collection
of colonies for our great Fraternity. This process begins months and sometimes
years in advance to search the United States and Canada for those institutions the
International Fraternity will be expanding.

Once the semester’s ‘line-up’ of expansions are set, several
weeks of personalized and specific training takes place, and two of our
seasoned chapter consultants are then sent to the university to work and live in
the area for five full weeks. These weeks are filled with countless interviews,
numerous sorority/organization presentations, and a multitude of recruitment events
to ensure the group is filled with the caliber of men that only PIKE can
recruit. After these five weeks, a fully functional group of PIKE men are
recruited, and are then officially instated as a colony for Pi Kappa Alpha. With
that, the International Fraternity is proud to announce its newest established colonies:

Kennesaw State University, Atlanta, GA (90 men)

University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA (95 men)

University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, Alpha Eta Chapter (106 men)

Texas A&M University, College Station, TX (111 men)

Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX (113 men)

“Pike has been the best decision I’ve made since coming to
college. The fraternity has helped mold and shape me into the young man I am
today and I don’t know where I’d be without it,” says Baker. As a campus
leader, he is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society,
National Society of Collegiate Scholars, The Bear Den (a student led sports
promotion and school spirit organization) and is the webmaster of the Business
Information Technology Club. Academically, he is a Management Information
Systems (MIS) major and was the 2010 recipient of the Datatronics Foundation
Scholarship which is awarded to one MIS student each year. He has also been named to the President’s
Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) each semester from Fall 2007 – Spring 2010. Dustin is a local volunteer firefighter, and
volunteers with Wescon Volunteer Fire Department in Conway, Arkansas. He is also an active volunteer with Pulaski
County’s Habitat for Humanity, and is a member of their emergency contact list which
is used to find volunteers on short notice when the organization is short
handed. In addition to these community
service activities, he also volunteers with a local church as a camp counselor
each summer assisting with middle school and high school students.

Since his initiation Dustin has found ways to improve the
chapter internally and on campus. Understanding
that alumni involvement is crucial to the health of a chapter, he began working
with his father, George Baker (Epsilon Phi ’77), to inform alumni of chapter
news and organizing alumni events. He
organized an alumni Homecoming banquet to bring the alumni back to the chapter

This decisive event takes place once every two years, and with 2009-2010 being one of Pi Kappa Alpha’s most successful years, there was plenty to discuss and celebrate.

Many changes were made to impact the organization positively, including changes and additions to our Chapter Codes and to our Fraternity’s Ritual. Also spread throughout the Convention were enthralling presentations on Pike Recruitment, our Fraternity’s History and Ritual, and Risk Awareness/Management. Needless to say, it was an exciting time.

The election of the new Supreme Council takes place at each Convention, along with recognition of our outstanding chapters, undergraduates, and volunteers for their achievements and service to our great Fraternity. This year, two new members were inducted into the Order of West Range, nine new chapters were chartered, and worthy members received the Loyalty Award, Tuttle Distinguished Achievement Award, Chapter Advisor of the Year Award, and Most Improved Chapter of the Year Award. 47 Raymond L. Orians Excellence Awards were presented, as were 18 coveted Robert Adger Smythe Awards.

After several long days of meetings and nominations, the new Supreme Council was announced. Leading the Fraternity into the next two years will be Kevin E. Virta (Western Michigan, Epsilon Psi ’83), Pi Kappa Alpha’s new International President for the 2010-2012 term.

The men were divided up into several groups, each with a leader from the YMCA of the Ozarks. Projects included clearing a walking trail for horses, spreading mulch in a playground, and repainting a gymnasium.

After another night of brotherhood events that included an impromptu game of hockey, the men bunkered down again, but woke up to rain – thus throwing a kink in their outdoor projects. Several members volunteered to stay behind though and finish up the parts of the project that were yet to be completed. Overall it was an extremely successful trip that earned the Alpha Kappa Chapter 1,792 hours of community service, as well as a strengthened brotherhood."

Submitted by Josh Kaltenbronn, president of Alpha Kappa Chapter.

Prominent Pike Named Iowa State's Head Coach

Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State, Alpha Phi ’91) has been named the head men’s basketball coach at Iowa State University. Fred, who is an Ames, Iowa native, will leave his job as Vice President of Basketball Operations with the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves to assume his new role as Iowa State’s men’s basketball coach.

Brother Hoiberg’s career began as a member of Iowa State’s basketball team from 1991-1995, where he was dubbed by teammates as "The Mayor," and is arguably one of the most popular players in ISU history. After graduating from Iowa State, Fred was selected in the second round of the 1995 NBA draft to the Indiana Pacers and played 10 years in the NBA with the Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

After a heart condition forced his retirement from active play in 2006, Fred has worked in the front office of the Timberwolves as Assistant General Manager and then as VP of Basketball Operations.

During Wednesday’s press conference, Hoiberg mentioned many characteristics that we look for when recruiting Pikes.
"Ladi Ogunro had ambitions of becoming a lawyer, hoping to transform the lives of the less fortunate. But as his senior year approached at the University of Michigan, he began to question the hefty cost of law school and decided to explore other options.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is awarded annually to about 250 students at universities from across the country. It’s awarded to students who show the potential to become highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of this type in these fields.

Zach was nominated for his work on a drug that combats inflammatory bowel disease. As a result of his work, scientists may be able to formulate a better delivery system for the drug.

A note about Zach, from his research advisor and fellow Pike, Dr. Gordon Purser:

"Zach is one of my academic advisees as well as a researcher in my laboratory. But what people don’t often appreciate is that Zach is one of my best friends and a brother through Pi Kappa Alpha. We lift together, run together, ride bikes together, and swim together. We are doing a full Ironman triathlon this November together. This is something I would never have attempted on my own. Only through his encouragement have I had the courage to try doing this. He is an amazing young man, and I am proud to have him as a friend and brother. So I guess in some ways I have provided him with opportunities and made him a better person; and in other ways he has provided me with opportunities and made me a better person. I suppose that is what brotherhood is about."

A native of Forth Worth, TX, Parker served in the Navy during World War II, played football at Hardin-Simmons University, and eventually received his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas. Subsequent to his graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting.

Parker caught his first big break in 1954, when he was cast as the lead role in Disney's "Davy Crockett" TV show. Coon-skin hats and Old Betsey rifles soon swept the nation's youth, as Parker's character represented the spirit of the American frontier.

From 1964-1970, Parker played yet another frontiersman and American icon, starring as "Daniel Boone" on NBC. He then retired from acting in 1970 to pursue real estate ventures, which included the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort, and an award-winning winery in Los Olivos, CA

In addition to raising critical funds for the cause, the yearly fundraiser draws attention across campus and throughout the community.

From campus newspaper The State Hornet: Last week, a collection of hair could be seen on the University Union floor as members of the fraternity had their heads shaved to support St. Baldrick's foundation, which funds children's cancer research.

Vincent Olivero, a sophomore communication studies major and member of the fraternity, said he's used to having hair, so being bald was different experience.

"That's the only reason I'd ever go bald - for a good cause like this," he said. Olivero said his mom had cancer, so he can empathize with people who have it, especially children. "Anything we can do to help them out by raising money and shaving our heads is always great," he said.

Robert Palu, senior business major and the president of Pi Kappa Alpha, mentioned that community service is one of the core pillars in his fraternity. He feels it's necessary to promote the charity events fraternities participate in, to let people know they're doing positive things for the community. "While we're doing good things, no one knows about it so they only talk about the negatives they read in the press."

The fraternity's first charity event on campus helped to raise over $6,000 in donations. St. Baldrick's mission is to "raise awareness and funds to cure kids cancer by supporting cancer research and fellowships," according to the foundation's 2009 press kit. P

The fraternity's $5,000 goal was set by Karlos Santos -Coy, Program Advisor for Student Activities and an Alumnus of Sacramento State. Santos-Coy, who is also an Alumnus of Pi Kappa Alpha, said he challenged the fraternity to reach $5,000, and if they did, he would also get his head shaved. "They definitely rose to the challenge. I think they got to$ 4,923 when my wife decided she would contribute the last $77," he said.

Santos-Coy was not surprised to find out the fraternity raised more than $5,000. Palu said his fraternity, who has a strong affiliation with the fire department, has raised money for Shriners Hospital to help burn victims. "You kind of run out of ways to raise money besides just asking for donations from fraternities and sororities, which have no money to begin with," Palu said.

UNH Pikes "Cycle for Life"

Pikes from the Gamma Mu Chapter at the University of New Hampshire are "Pedaling for the Cure" in honor of their brother, Taylor Trudeau (1986-2008), who fell victim to leukemia.

The event raised over $4,000 in its first year, and the event topped $11,000 in 2009. All proceeds go to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, where Taylor received treatment.

If you’re interested in organizing a “Pedaling for the Cure” philanthropy event at your campus, please contact Scott Lincoln at (508) 969-4440. He interviewed senators, astronauts, and many more before releasing Legacy of Honor.

In his new follow-up, Spirit of Adventure, Townley focuses on a younger generation of Eagle Scouts. They are competing in extreme sports, fighting in Iraq, and in many other ways demonstrating the adverturous and courageous spirit of scouts.

The book follows the author across America and around the world as he uncovers Eagle Scouts pushing their limits and serving others. The journey takes him to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the cliffs of Red Rock Canyon in Nevada, the Appalachian Trail and Philmont, rural villages in Africa, inner city classrooms, NFL fields, and an aircraft carrier underway in the Pacific Ocean.

The Eagle Scouts he encounters capture the spirit of Scouting and represent the Movement’s future. The book will be the first to investigate the next generation of America’s leaders and will establish the role Scouting values and experiences played in their development. Unmatched in scope, significance, energy, and diversity, Spirit of Adventure tells a compelling story that will inspire young people and adults alike, and will reintroduce Scouting to America.

Townley graduated from Washington & Lee University, and has worked in the U.S. House of Representatives, helped manage global strategy for a $9B international firm, served his alma mater during a $240M campaign, and coached track at Marist School in Atlanta.
